"Internet Doomsday" virus could black out nearly 250,000 PCs on 9 July '12

About a quarter-million computer users around the world are at risk of losing Internet access on Monday because of malicious software at the heart of a hacking scam that U.S. authorities shut down last November. Some blogs and news reports hyped the risk of an outage, warning of a potential "blackout" and describing the Alureon malware as the "Internet Doomsday" virus.

Yet experts said only a tiny fraction of computer users were at risk, and Internet providers would be on call to quickly restore service. They said they considered the threat to be small compared with more-prevalent viruses such as Zeus and SpyEye, which infect millions of PCs and are used to commit financial fraud.

As of this week, about 245,000 computers worldwide were still infected by Alureon and its brethren, according to security firm Deteque. That included 45,355 computers in the United States.

The viruses were designed to redirect Internet traffic through rogue DNS servers controlled by criminals, according to the FBI. DNS servers are computer switchboards that direct Web traffic.
The coming of Internet Doomsday?
The coming of Internet Doomsday?

When authorities took down the rogue servers, a federal judge in New York ordered that temporary servers be kept in place while the victims' machines were repaired. The temporary servers will shut down at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Monday, which means the infected PCs that have not been fixed will no longer be able to connect to the Internet.

Some U.S. Internet providers, including AT&T Inc and Time Warner Cable, have made temporary arrangements so that their customers will be able to access the Internet using the address of the rogue DNS servers.

Information on how to identify and clean up infections can be found on a website that a group of security firms and other experts set up: www.dcwg.org.

"It's a very easy one to fix," said Gunter Ollmann, vice president of research for security company Damballa. "There are plenty of tools available."

Many of the machines that remain infected are probably not in active use since most victims were notified of the problem, said security expert Johannes Ullrich, who runs the Internet Storm Center, which monitors Web threats.

The United States has charged seven people for orchestrating the worldwide Internet fraud. Six were arrested in Estonia, while the seventh, who was living in Russia, is still at large. Tallinn has so far extradited two of the men to New York where they appeared in Manhattan federal court.

Guide to FarmVille Tweeds (Feeds +Twitter)

Get more social! Now share feeds for Watering Cans and Animal Feed on Twitter! Grow your trees and animals faster by connecting to Twitter with FarmVille today!

WHAT’S TWITTER?

Twitter is a social networking service that allows people to mircoblog or tweet messages.

WHAT ARE TWEEDS?

Tweeds is a feature that allows player to publish feeds on Twitter. Tweeds also allows players who venture into Twitter and claim Animal Feed and Watering Cans. In essence, this feature lets people post and click on game feeds on Twitter. Hence, Twitter + Feeds = Tweeds.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Got a lot of animals to feed? Got a lot of trees of seeds to grow? If you say yes to any of the two questions, then you’re in luck! Connect your Twitter account to Facebook today and get a chance to claim Animal Feed and Watering Cans. You can claim 5 Tweeds per 24 hours. You can also publish Tweeds for your friends to click on.

In order to claim Animal Feeds and Watering Cans on Twitter, you are required to link your Facebook and Twitter account together. There’s no special assembly required. It’s fast, easy, free and you have nothing to lose and Animal Feed and Watering Cans to gain! What are you waiting for?

Once you opt into Tweeds, you will automatically be able to publish feeds on Twitter whenever you publish Animal Feed and Watering Cans on Facebook. And don’t worry, the number of times you publish on Twitter will not hinder how you publish on Facebook. Also, the number of times you claim a Tweed will not affect what you claim on Facebook either. Remember you can claim a Tweed 5 times per day.

HOW TO OPT IN TWEEDS

After loading FarmVille, a pop will show up inviting you to connect your Facebook account to your Twitter account.

After clicking on “Connect to Twitter,” you will be taken to Twitter’s Login portal. If you already have an account with Twitter, go ahead and enter your login and password. If you don’t have a Twitter account, click on “sign up” found on the top right of the screen. Signing up for Twitter is easy, fast and free.

Clicking the "Authorize App" button will grant us the permissions to help you publish feeds on Twitter and claim them too.

If you have already have an existing Twitter account, it will take a few seconds for Tweeds to initiate. Once your Twitter and Facebook account has synced, you’ll see a prompted telling you are ready to use toe Tweed Feature.

Don't worry! You will NOT be installing a new game. Clicking "No, thanks" will cancel the ability to publish and claim on Tweeds. If you change your mind, click here OR scroll to the bottom of your game and click on SETTINGS. Your window will refresh and take you to the settings page, where you can opt in and opt out of the Tweed feature. See pic below.

NOTE: If you created a new Twitter account, it will take roughly 24 hours for you to start publishing feeds on Twitter. Can you start claiming Tweeds immediately though.

PUBLISH A TWEED AND CLAIM ONE

Once you have connected your Facebook and Twitter account, you will automatically publish feeds to Twitter when you harvest Orchards, Groves and Animal Pens. So whatever Animal Feeds and Watering Cans you share on Facebook, will also be shared on Twitter.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE HASHTAG: #FarmVille

The hashtag is a function where trending topics are clumped together. In our case, if you type #farmville, you'll get search results from people who tweeted about FarmVille. This hash tag will also pull and list Animal Feed and Watering Cans as well. This is an easy way to find the feeds your looking for with the hectic search!

HOW TO OPT OUT

In the event where you wish to stop using the Tweed feature, scroll to the bottom of the game and click on SETTINGS. Your window will refresh and will give you to the option to opt out of Tweeds. Just uncheck the box. If you change your mind, just check the box to enable Tweeds.

TWITTER WON’T ALLOW TO CLAIM ITEMS. WHY?

If you attempt to claim a Tweed without syncing your Facebook and Twitter account, you will not be able to claim the item. Instead, you’ll get “Howdy Farmer! You must enable Twitter for FarmVille to claim this item” message.

To claim tweeds, you will need to sync up you Facebook and Twitter account. Here’s how
  • Load Farmville
  • Click on SETTING found below your game, or click here
  • Check off the box in the Twitter section to enable Tweeds
  • Reload game
  • The Twitter invite should pop up, click on "Connect to Twitter"
  • Login your Twitter info and click on "Authorize app"
