We’ve seen plenty of video games optioned for the big screen over the years, and lately we’ve even been seeing all kinds of board games picked up as well. Whether or not these games have stories or characters worth developing into a movie is basically irrelevant; all that matters is that they have a recognizable brand with a built-in fanbase. Well, now that most of the valuable console games and board games have been snatched up by studios, it looks like we’re on the verge of another ridiculous Hollywood trend: Facebook games. That’s right, a movie is reportedly in development based on Mafia Wars, the casual online game that fills up your inbox with annoying requests from friends who want you to join in the fun.
Mafia Wars is one of many games developed by Zynga, a company that specializes in simple social network games for Facebook and web browsers. They’ve been accused of using sneaky and underhanded business practices including making unauthorized charges to credit cards and installing unwanted software on people’s computers. I think I’d actually prefer to see a movie about Zynga itself in the vein of David Fincher’s The Social Network rather than a Mafia Wars movie.
According to Pajiba, the movie is simply described as a “crime thriller based on the popular video game.” Can you get more generic than that? Mafia Wars is being produced by Ted Field and Radar Pictures (The Box, The Invention of Lying, The Chronicles of Riddick), and is currently in search of a writer. Sadly, I’m sure it won’t be long before we also get a movie based on Zynga’s most popular and insidious game, FarmVille. Now that’s Hollywood magic for you.
